Let’s demand a moratorium on new data centres in Quebec!
In Quebec, we have everything we need to build a society that frees us from dependence on the United States. Équiterre is calling for a moratorium on the construction of data centers in Quebec to allow for substantive discussions about how we use our energy resources - resources that belong to all Quebecers.
-
Giving that our electricity is a collective asset that should be used to green our local economy, rather than to swell the profits of American billionaires;
-
Giving that is facing record demand for new data centres, and that our current electricity production capacity is insufficient to meet this massive demand without compromising our own needs;
-
Giving that Quebeckers risk seeing their electricity bills increase to fund these data centres;
-
Giving that these vast infrastructure projects will have an impact on our agricultural land, natural resources, and living environments;
-
Given that these data centres are primarily owned by foreign companies, which only serves to increase our economic dependence;
-
Given that digital giants refuse to pay their fair share;
-
Given that there are still no clear laws or regulations from the Quebec government to govern the development of data centres:
Équiterre demands an immediate moratorium on the development of data centres in Quebec in order to define a clear strategy for regulating these projects.
